Laboratory Six - TTT Diagrams
During this laboratory
experiment we will examine if the predictions (structure and properties) of the
TTT Diagram are experimentally observed. We will examine the hardness and
microstructure of 1075 or 1080 steel processed as follows.
● Untreated
● Heated
to 950F and held for 1 hr and Quenched to Room Temperature
● Heated
to 1120F and held for 1 hr and Quenched to Room Temperature
● Heated
to 1300F and held for 1 hr and Quenched to Room Temperature
● Heated
to 1700 F and held for 1-2 hrs and Quenched to Room Temperature
● Heated
to 1700 F held for 1-2 hrs , cooled to 950F held for 1 hr minutes, and Quenched
to Room Temperature
● Heated
to 1700 F held for 1-2 hrs , cooled to 1120F held for 1 hr minutes, and
Quenched to Room Temperature

We will
measure Hardness using the Rockwell A Scale. Ensure that any flakes are removed
from the surface of the steel. We will mount and polish the samples as during lab 2 .
A lab data sheet is included to help you better prepare your notes for the
technical memorandum describing the results of the laboratory experiment. This
sheet is not to be turned in with the HW assignment. However, you are
encouraged to use it to help prepare your answer to the HW question.
